The Story Behind Glomesh

Glomesh was founded in Bondi, Sydney, in 1958 by Hungarian immigrants Louis and Alice Kennedy. Working from their factory on Isabella Street, they turned an enamel-coated metal mesh into a distinctly Australian luxury signature — used for handbags, purses, cigarette cases, compacts and more. At its peak it was a genuinely upmarket name — pieces were expensive, much desired, and treated like jewellery rather than everyday accessories. In 1971 the company, Glo International, even won a government award for Outstanding Export Achievement — Glomesh mesh was world-famous, made right here in Australia.

Production later moved to a factory in St Peters, in Sydney's Marrickville area, through the 1960s and 70s, before the business was sold in 1974 and the brand eventually disappeared from shelves in the 1980s. It lay dormant for around 30 years until being relaunched in 2014 by the original founders' grandson — proof of how enduring the name still is.
